Understanding research in dentistry
In part 2 of this 3-part series, Dr. Varkha Rattu discusses how to read a research paper effectively to ensure you base your clinical decisions on robust and reliable evidence. Dr. Rattu will cover three main areas in this short video- understanding the purpose of a paper, evaluating the methodology, and evaluating the results.

She also holds the Speciality Fellowship in Periodontology from the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
Dr Rattu has advanced expertise in the non-surgical and surgical management of periodontal and peri-implant diseases, mucogingival defects, and implant dentistry. Her clinical approach is centred on delivering evidence-based, personalised care, with a strong focus on long-term periodontal stability and patient-centred outcomes.
With a particular interest in the relationship between periodontitis and systemic disease, Dr Rattu is dedicated to promoting integrated oral and general healthcare. She received the British Society of Periodontology Audit Award for her work and has founded the Periodontitis–Diabetes Hub, an initiative designed to raise awareness among patients, dental professionals and wider healthcare teams.
Her research, published in the prestigious Journal of Clinical Periodontology, has achieved international recognition and earned her the British Society of Periodontology Systematic Review Prize. She also serves as a peer reviewer for leading journals and co-developed the “Understanding Research” series with Colgate, supporting clinicians in critically appraising and communicating research more effectively.
A passionate educator, communicator and advocate for evidence-based periodontology, Dr Rattu regularly lectures on national and international platforms. Through her teaching, she aims to make periodontology and implant dentistry clinically relevant, practical and inspiring.
